The team’s head coach, Billy Donovan, said that while the organization embraces people from all backgrounds, Ivey’s remarks did not align with its values. Donovan stressed the importance of professionalism and mutual respect, saying that every player must uphold high standards both on and off the court. Following his release, Ivey joined an Instagram Live session from a commercial flight. He spoke at length about his faith, stating that the championship rings of LeBron James and Michael Jordan would be irrelevant on Judgment Day. He also claimed he was not at fault for being waived and that other teams would shy away from signing him because of his religious stance. Ivey has talked openly this season about battling depression.
