Jailbreak in New Orleans: Who's to Blame?
New Orleans, Louisiana, USA,Wednesday, May 21, 2025
The sheriff's office has suspended three employees without pay pending the outcome of the investigation. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson has suggested that the escapees had help from inside the department. She has also come under increased scrutiny, with some calling for her to resign.
The Louisiana Bureau of Investigation has arrested a jail employee in connection with the escape. Sterling Williams, a 33-year-old maintenance worker, admitted to turning off the water in the cell where the inmates escaped from. He did this at the request of one of the escapees, allowing them to carry out their plan.
The Orleans Parish jail has been under a federal consent decree since 2013. Federal monitors' compliance reports have warned that the sheriff's office was not meeting certain safety and supervision requirements. This jailbreak has highlighted the ongoing issues with the jail's security and management.
Governor Jeff Landry has directed the Department of Corrections to audit the jail. He has also issued executive orders to examine aspects of the broader criminal justice system. This includes identifying all pretrial detainees still awaiting sentencing and investigating judges with high acquittal rates or slow case progress.
