Japan Faces Potential Rare Earth Export Limits from China
Japan is concerned about China possibly stopping the export of crucial minerals. These minerals are essential for various products, including phones, cars, and weapons.
China has stated they will not export items that can be used for both beneficial and harmful purposes. While they did not specify which items, experts believe they are referring to rare earths. These special metals are found in many devices, such as electric cars and missiles.
A Chinese newspaper suggested that China might increase inspections on these metals, making it difficult for Japan to obtain them. A former journalist from a Chinese newspaper warned that this could severely impact multiple industries. He speculated that China might completely halt the export of these metals.
This is not the first time such a scenario has occurred. In 2010, China stopped exporting rare earths to Japan during a territorial dispute, causing significant economic problems for Japan.
Now, China might repeat this action, possibly under the guise of increased inspections. A Japanese expert speculated that this could be China's strategy.
