Jenny Lorenzo’s DIY Path to Media Success

Growing up in Miami, Florida, Jenny Lorenzo was just like any other Cuban American kid, glued to the TV. She looked up to comedic legends like Jaleel White and Lucille Ball. But she noticed something missing - there weren't many Latino characters, especially Cuban American ones. As she grew older and pursued acting, this lack of representation became more apparent. Lorenzo didn’t let this discourage her. Instead, she took matters into her own hands. She created an online series called "The Abuela Cinematic Universe, " inspired by her Cuban American family, particularly her late grandmother, Orquídea Diaz. The series features relatable skits and has become popular for its authentic representation.

Lorenzo believes in the power of media to shape our perceptions of each other. She thinks that by telling diverse stories, we can open minds and hearts. For aspiring Latino entertainers, she advises a DIY approach. If you're frustrated with the lack of representation, she says, "Get to work! " Don't do it alone, though.
