The New York Jets have made a surprising move by letting go of their head coach, Robert Saleh, after just five games into the 2024 season. The decision comes after a tough start, with the team sitting at a 2-3 record. This change marks the first time in over 40 years that the Jets have fired a head coach mid-season.

Saleh took over a team that had a dismal 2-14 record under former coach Adam Gase in 2020. He tried to turn things around by drafting quarterback Zach Wilson, but things didn't improve much. The Jets went 4-13 in Saleh’s first year and 7-10 the following year, losing their last six games.

One of the biggest issues during Saleh’s tenure was the poor performance of the quarterbacks. Wilson never lived up to expectations, and injuries to Aaron Rodgers only made things worse. Despite high hopes for Rodgers' return this season, the team struggled, especially in their recent loss to the Vikings in London.

The final straw was the Jets' loss to the Vikings, where Rodgers threw three interceptions, and the offense looked lost. The team has also been plagued by penalties, with 15 in their game against the Broncos. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will step in as the interim coach.

This change comes with former Jets first-round pick Sam Darnold playing for the Vikings, adding to the sting for the Jets' owner Woody Johnson. Ulbrich will have a chance to prove his worth, with potential full-time replacements like Mike Vrabel and Bill Belichick available for next year.
