Jimmy Carter's African Legacy: A Story of Change
AfricaSunday, January 5, 2025
Carter's focus was on human rights and empowering Africans. He made 43 more trips to Africa after his presidency, promoting projects that let Africans decide their future. His work on civil and political rights later expanded to include social and economic rights, seen as crucial for public health.
His efforts in Zimbabwe were notable. He welcomed its independence and hosted the new prime minister. However, relations soured due to deadly repression, and he was later banned from the country. Carter also criticized South Africa's apartheid system.
The Carter Center, founded in 1982, played a key role in monitoring African elections and brokering cease-fires. Fighting disease was another major focus. Carter's quest to eliminate guinea worm disease, which once affected millions, has nearly succeeded, with just 14 cases reported in 2023.
Health officials in Africa praised Carter's dedication. His efforts showed that even the most marginalized people mattered.
