Joe Manchin Launches New Independent Campaign

West Virginia, USAFriday, July 24, 2026
Manchin, now 78, is stepping back into politics after a break. He has started the Independent Leadership Council to help people run as independents across America. The council’s goal is not to form a new party. Instead it wants candidates who can vote with Democrats or Republicans when it makes sense and oppose them when it does not. The first meeting was held in West Virginia with candidates from California, Montana and Iowa. They plan to look at races in Alaska and Washington next. A Gallup poll shows 45 % of adults call themselves independents. Many think this group could change the balance in Congress, which is very split right now.
Manchin said an independent lawmaker could have a big influence in the next Congress. He believes such a person can bring both parties together and point out when they go too far. The council may help candidates campaign, raise money and organize locally. If one candidate wins in November, it could shape the next presidential race. Manchin left the Senate in 2025 after becoming tired of extreme politics on both sides. He has since written a book, worked with his daughter’s nonprofit and spoken at think‑tank panels. He says he does not plan to run for office again. Instead, he wants to support others who want the same bipartisan cooperation he has worked for all these years.
