Jon Stewart Backs Comedian's Trump Rally Joke

Comedian Jon Stewart came to the defense of Tony Hinchcliffe after his controversial joke at a recent Trump rally sparked backlash. At Sunday’s Trump event in New York City, Hinchcliffe, known for his podcast “Kill Tony, ” poked fun at Puerto Rico by calling it a “floating island of garbage. ” This joke didn’t sit well with some media outlets, and prominent figures like MSNBC and CNN hosts expressed their disapproval. Stewart tackled the issue on Monday’s episode of “The Daily Show. ” He showed a montage of left-leaning news personalities reacting strongly to Hinchcliffe’s joke. The clips ended with “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski calling his jokes “vile. ” Stewart then made a playful jab, suggesting that the name “vile jokes” could be the title of Hinchcliffe’s first comedy album.

Stewart acknowledged that having a roast comedian at a political rally near Election Day might not have been the best move. However, he also pointed out that Hinchcliffe was simply doing what he does best: making edgy jokes. To illustrate this, Stewart aired clips from a Tom Brady roast where Hinchcliffe made jokes about various groups, including Jews and African Americans. Stewart pretended to be shocked by these jokes, but his laughter gave away his amusement. Stewart concluded that he finds Hinchcliffe’s humor funny and defensible. He noted that expecting a comedian not to make roast jokes at a rally is like asking Beyoncé not to perform when she’s the special guest, referencing a recent Harris campaign rally where Beyoncé didn’t sing.
