Jurassic Discovery: Dinosaur Tracks Unveiled in England

Imagine the surprise of a worker digging in a quarry in southern England. Instead of just clay, they found something extraordinary - a dinosaur highway! Over 200 tracks were discovered at Dewars Farm Quarry in Oxfordshire, dating back an impressive 166 million years. A team of scientists from the universities of Oxford and Birmingham joined in to excavate and learn more. These tracks provide a fascinating window into the lives of dinosaurs. They reveal movements, interactions, and the tropical environment they lived in during the Middle Jurassic period. Four sets of tracks belonged to long-necked, plant-eating sauropods, likely Cetiosaurus, which could grow up to 60 feet long. Another set was from Megalosaurus, a fearsome predator with a distinct triple-claw print.

One interesting spot where the tracks intersect suggests possible encounters between the predators and their prey. Scientists are excited because even after 200 years of studying Megalosaurus, new evidence keeps surfacing. In the 1990s, a nearby limestone quarry revealed 40 sets of footprints, but access is limited today. The new site was documented with over 20, 000 digital images and 3D models using drones. This will help future studies determine dinosaur sizes, walking patterns, and speeds. The findings will be showcased in an upcoming exhibit at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History and on the BBC’s “Digging for Britain” program.
