Kamala Harris' Bigoted Faith-Based Attacks: A Closer Look

Kamala Harris has long been accused of targeting people of faith, particularly Catholics. Her blatant discrimination was on full display during a 2018 Senate hearing where she subtly criticized the Knights of Columbus for being an 'all-male society comprised primarily of Catholic men.' She implied their adherence to core Catholic beliefs about life and family made them unfit for public office, even asking one nominee if he would disavow his membership in order to avoid any appearance of bias. This is a clear religious test for office, which the Constitution explicitly prohibits. Harris' sponsorship of the so-called 'Do No Harm Act' further reveals her view that religion should be confined to private spaces and disavowed in public life. The bill would have required healthcare workers to perform procedures like abortion even if it violated their deeply held religious beliefs, closing down faith-based charities. In Harris' eyes, using the law to discriminate against someone's race, gender, sexual orientation or identity is unacceptable - but targeting people of faith for their beliefs seems perfectly acceptable. As attorney general in California, Harris also advocated for laws that would force Catholic and Christian pregnancy centers to refer women to abortion clinics, undermining their mission. She joined other attorneys general in asking the Supreme Court to compel religious employers like Hobby Lobby to cover contraception and abortifacients in employee health plans. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops called Harris' support for bills like the Equality Act an attack on religious liberty that would force faith-based institutions to violate their core beliefs or face government prosecution.

The Supreme Court has repeatedly rejected these efforts to strip Americans of their religious rights. Harris' rhetoric paints people with sincere faith as 'extremists,' implying they are unfit for public service. She thinks Catholics and Christians should be forced to choose between their careers and their beliefs, and that religion is only acceptable when kept behind closed doors. This is the very definition of bigotry.
