Kash Patel: From FBI to ATF
Washington, D.C., USASunday, February 23, 2025
In January, several House Republicans, led by Rep. Lauren Boebert and Rep. Eric Burlison, introduced legislation. This legislation aims to abolish the ATF completely. Boebert stated that the ATF does not serve as an ally to the Second Amendment and law-abiding firearm owners.
The agency's director under Biden, Steven Dettelback, was its first permanent leader since 2015. Prior administrations struggled to get a nominee confirmed by the Senate.
Attorney General Pam Bondi recently fired the chief counsel of ATF, Pamela Hicks. Bondi accused Hicks of weaponizing the agency against gun owners. This accusation was made without evidence.
Patel, a loyalist to Trump, was confirmed by the Senate to lead the FBI. Two Republican senators, Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, opposed his nomination. They joined all Democrats in their opposition.
Kash Patel's move to the ATF could signal a shift in the agency's priorities. It remains to be seen how his leadership will impact the enforcement of federal laws related to firearms and explosives.
