Keeping Politics Clean: The Fight Against Shady Campaigns

New York City’s campaign finance system is designed to keep big money out of local politics, and it does a pretty good job. But the system faces a big challenge: shady politicians like Mayor Eric Adams. Recently, the Campaign Finance Board stopped Adams from getting public matching funds for his re-election campaign. This happened after he was accused of abusing the system in a federal indictment back in September. Adams shouldn’t have gotten these funds in the first place, and the city needs to do more to prevent such mistakes. The finance board said Adams’s actions were harmful to the matching funds program, and they took away up to $4. 3 million from his campaign. This could be a big setback for Adams, as other candidates are already lining up to challenge him.

In 2021, Adams received $10 million in public funds, but some of it was improper because he got illegal foreign donations. The finance board spotted some shady donations but Adams ignored their request for documentation. City Councilman Lincoln Restler wants to change the law so that matching funds are cut off if politicians ignore such requests. Adams seems more interested in pleasing Donald Trump than leading the city. Trump even said he might pardon Adams. This could help Adams run again without legal issues, but at least taxpayers won’t have to pay for his campaign.
