Imagine a world where everyone can access healthcare without worrying about costs. That's what Kenya aimed for when it launched a Universal Health Coverage (UHC) pilot in 2019. This project, active in four counties—Isiolo, Kisumu, Machakos, and Nyeri—focused on removing user fees and boosting healthcare supplies. The study involved chats with health facility clients, health sector stakeholders, community members, and document reviews. Researchers found that people used healthcare services more because they didn't have to pay at the time of care. Plus, essential health items were more available. However, things weren't all smooth sailing. There were several challenges. For instance, it wasn't clear how this pilot fit with existing health financing plans. The benefits package wasn't well-defined, and there were hiccups in funding flow. Healthcare providers didn't have much say, and facilities lacked the needed infrastructure. Procuring and supplying healthcare commodities was tough, and accountability between the Ministry of Health and county health departments was an issue. This study shows that real change needs a complete overhaul of the system. We need to beef up the capacity to implement these reforms and make sure they fit with what's already in place.
