Kicking It with the Brain: How Fitness Affects Teens' Thinking
Wednesday, November 20, 2024
Researchers split 36 teens, including 16 girls, into two groups. One group played an hour of outdoor football, and the other relaxed for an hour. They tested how quickly the teens could solve brain games before and after the activity. Guess what? Even though the soccer players didn't show immediate brain gains, the fittest teens did better overall.
Now, here's a fascinating fact. Only the fittest teens showed improvements in working memory after playing soccer. That means they could remember and use information better. But, get this, the game didn't affect their levels of a brain protein called BDNF, which is linked to learning and memory.
So, the takeaway is clear. Regular exercise, not just a single game, can sharpen your brain. But it's most effective if you're already in good shape.
