Kid-Sized Seats: Do Boosters Fit Better Than Cars?

Ever wondered if car seats and boosters are really designed with kids in mind? Scientists took a close look at modern vehicle seats and boosters, comparing them with kids' body measurements. They checked out 275 rear seats from US cars made between 2009 and 2022, measuring things like seat length, seat height, and belt outlet height. They also measured 85 boosters and checked out the anthropometries—that's a fancy word for body measurements—of 80 US kids aged 4 to 14. The results? Car seats were often way too long for kids' thighs. On average, seats were 9. 5 cm longer than kids' thighs. Only 16. 4% of seats were shorter than the average kid's thigh length. Even for the tallest kids, only 18. 8% had thighs longer than the average seat length.

Boosters, on the other hand, were a better fit. For all types of boosters—multi-mode, high-back, and low-back—child thigh lengths were much closer to booster seat pan lengths. The average booster seat height also helped kids sit up straight, with their shoulders at the right height for seatbelts. So, what's the takeaway? Cars need shorter seats for kids, and caregivers need to know the importance of boosters for proper seatbelt fit. Even if kids are over 8 years old or taller than 145 cm, boosters still matter to keep them safe and comfy.
