Kids and Phones: Should Schools Ban Devices?

Imagine a school day without smartphones. Governor Hochul wants just that for students in grades K-12. She believes this can help free kids from the constant buzz of social media and the mental health pressures that come with it. But is it that simple? Smartphones can be a huge distraction in class. Teachers often struggle to keep students focused when phones are around. And even during lunch breaks, kids can miss out on face-to-face interactions if they're glued to their screens. If the state's plan gets approved, each school district will decide how to enforce the ban. Phones that don't connect to the internet, like flip phones, won't be banned. But what about smartwatches that can connect to the internet? And what about kids with disabilities who need digital devices for medical or translation purposes? Schools might use pouches or lockers to store devices. But tracking all those devices, especially in big schools like Brooklyn Tech, could be tricky. And what about the new low-distraction devices that tech companies are making? Are they allowed? A ban might not be perfect, but it sends a clear message: when kids are in school, they should focus on learning and connecting with teachers and friends.
