Kraken Adds Simple Bitcoin and Ether Options to Grow the Crypto Market

Sunday, July 19, 2026
Kraken has introduced cash‑settled options for Bitcoin and Ethereum, a move aimed at expanding the crypto options market rather than merely competing for it. The new products are European‑style, USD‑settled contracts that can be accessed through Kraken Pro by eligible clients outside Europe, North America and Australia. A full European rollout is planned for later. The company’s director of derivatives says the options sector in crypto is still tiny compared with traditional finance, where options dominate derivative trading. “Crypto options activity is a fraction of what it is in traditional markets, but the gap is closing as professional and institutional capital moves into digital assets, ” he explained. Unlike many current venues that focus on institutional traders, Kraken’s design targets retail investors. The contracts are linear and dollar‑settled, eliminating the need to hold or manage crypto collateral. Premiums, profits and losses are all in U. S. dollars, making the product more accessible to everyday traders.
Kraken also integrates options into the same account used for spot and futures, enabling portfolio margin by default. Traders can post collateral in over 30 currencies, reducing the amount of capital required to hold multiple positions. The exchange has invested in a user‑friendly interface and educational tools that explain call, put and multi‑leg strategies. The goal is to broaden the market’s reach. “Existing crypto options are built for a narrow slice of the trader base, ” the director noted. By simplifying the process, Kraken hopes to attract a wider audience and foster greater adoption of options as digital assets become more institutionalized. Future plans include adding a public order book for better price discovery, expanding availability to more regions and supporting additional assets. Europe is the next priority, as Kraken already holds the necessary regulatory approvals to offer derivatives there.
