Labour MPs push for UK to stop trading with Israeli settlements

Over 130 British Labour politicians have signed a letter demanding the government halt trade with Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Unlike past disputes, this push comes from inside the ruling party, creating tension between tradition and party loyalty. The lawmakers argue current policies aren't working and the situation for Palestinians keeps getting worse. Their solution? Cutting economic ties with these settlements might force change. Israel’s government has allowed settlements to grow fast, with some leaders even talking about taking over more West Bank land. Most countries see this as against international law since it happened after the 1967 war. Things got worse after October 2023 when the Gaza conflict started, leading to more violence against Palestinians.

Europe is starting to act. Spain already banned goods from these settlements, while Ireland and the Netherlands might follow. Britain, though, hasn’t taken such a strong step. Their foreign office criticized settler violence and settlement growth but didn’t directly support the trade ban idea. Meanwhile, London has paused trade talks with Israel, cut some weapon sales, and punished two far-right ministers—actions that show frustration but no major shift. One big worry is a planned settlement called E1, which could split the West Bank in half. Britain has spoken against it before and even asked companies not to work on it. Reports say new rules might be coming to stop British businesses from helping build E1, but officials won’t confirm the details yet.
