Lessons Democrats Must Learn from the 2024 Election

The 2024 election results are in, and they've shaken up some long-held beliefs among Democrats. It's time to reevaluate their strategies and assumptions. For years, Democrats believed that high voter turnout always works in their favor. However, the Trump era has flipped that script. Now, Democrats rely more on consistent voters, while Republicans gain from turning out less frequent voters. This is why Democrats often do better in low turnout elections like midterms. Another big shift is that Democrats are no longer the clear choice for working-class voters. Exit polls show Trump winning voters without college degrees and those with incomes between $30, 000 and $100, 000. This is a significant change from previous elections where Democrats held a stronger edge with these groups.

Trump's base has expanded, too. He's made gains in major cities, Native American reservations, and heavily Latino communities. Even in traditionally liberal areas, Trump showed improvement. This includes cities like Philadelphia, Detroit, and affluent suburbs like Loudoun County, Virginia. Immigration policies are also a surprising area of change. Democrats assumed that Latinos and immigrants would vote against restrictive policies. However, Trump had his best-ever performance among Latinos and made gains among Asian Americans and in immigrant communities. Lastly, the idea that the Electoral College is biased against Democrats took a hit. Trump won both the Electoral College and the popular vote this time around. This challenges the notion that large blue states like California and New York are underrepresented compared to small red states.
