Khaled Mohamed Ali Al Hishri, a 47-year-old man from Libya, is in serious legal trouble. He is accused of murder, torture, and rape during the 2011 civil war. The charges include crimes against humanity, and he is currently in the custody of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

First Libyan in ICC Custody

This is a historic case. Al Hishri is the first Libyan to be held by the ICC. The court has been investigating war crimes committed during Libya's civil war, and they have nine more suspects they want to arrest.

Allegations of Brutality in Mitiga Prison

Prosecutors claim that thousands of people, including women and children, were held in Mitiga prison for long periods. They were allegedly subjected to torture, sexual abuse, and other forms of cruelty.

Request for Release Denied

Al Hishri has asked to be released while he awaits trial, but the judges have told him he must submit a formal request. His trial is not expected to begin until late 2026, with a confirmation hearing scheduled for May 2025.

Another Suspect Freed in Italy

In January, Italy arrested Osama Elmasry Njeem, another Libyan suspect. However, he was sent back to Libya after Italian authorities claimed the arrest warrant had errors. Njeem is also accused of abusing prisoners in Mitiga prison, and his release sparked outrage in Italy.
