Light Pillar Sets Sail in the U. S.
Greenwich Entertainment is bringing the debut feature of director‑writer Xu Zao to American theaters. The film, titled Light Pillar, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in a program spotlighting fresh global voices and will roll out across U.S. cinemas next year.
A Hybrid Storytelling Experience
Light Pillar blends hand‑drawn animation with live‑action footage, creating a unique visual tapestry. The narrative follows Zha, a janitor at an abandoned film studio, who:
- Escapes into a virtual world where he falls in love online and dreams of traveling to the Moon.
- Faces a digital crash that transforms the studio’s ruins into a set for a science‑fiction film.
Veteran actor Da Peng stars in the live‑action segments and also served as a producer.
Aiming for Warmth and Humor
Xu Zao and producer Lu Xiaowei hope the film’s blend of humor and warmth will resonate with U.S. audiences. They explain that the title, Old New East West Film Studios, invites anyone who loves dreaming big to join in.
Distribution Deal
The U.S. distribution agreement was announced at a major film market in Cannes, where Greenwich’s representative negotiated with the filmmakers’ agent.
