LinkedIn Takes on Fake News with Free Verification

You might have heard about LinkedIn’s big plan to fight misinformation. They’ve verified over 55 million users for free. That’s a lot of people! By November, you’ll see these users with special badges in the main feed. Oscar Rodriguez, LinkedIn’s trust and safety vice president, says deep-fake videos and tricky photos are making it hard to tell what’s real and what’s not. This is a big deal for stopping misinformation and people pretending to be experts.

LinkedIn started this in April 2023. Other platforms, like X and Meta, charge users for verification. But LinkedIn wants to do it for free and has a goal to verify 100 million users by 2025. With more AI tools like ChatGPT, it’s easier and cheaper to make fake accounts. Social networks are working hard to stop this. LinkedIn’s plan is to use two strategies to make sure their users are real.
