Little Turtles Find a Warm Welcome in Jersey City
Late-Year Rescue
Five tiny diamondback terrapin turtles got a lucky break recently. They were found late in the year on Long Beach Island. Normally, these little guys should have already found a cozy spot to hibernate for the winter. But thanks to Project Terrapin, they now have a temporary home at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City.
A Warm Winter Home
The Liberty Science Center is stepping up to help these hatchlings survive the cold months. They will care for the turtles until spring. Then, the turtles will be released back into the wild. This is a big deal because it gives them a better chance to grow and thrive.
Project Terrapin's Mission
Project Terrapin is all about protecting these unique turtles. They do this through research, education, and working with the community. Their goal is to make sure the diamondback terrapin population stays strong in New Jersey.
Visit the Hatchlings
Visitors to the Liberty Science Center can see the hatchlings up close. They are part of the Our Hudson Home exhibit. This exhibit shows off the wildlife of the Hudson River and teaches people about protecting local ecosystems. It is full of interactive displays and examples of how to take care of the environment.
