In a small village called Homer Glen, a young girl named Adalind Akiko Grande, known affectionately as Warrior Addy, left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was only 9 years old when she passed away on February 14, 2024, after a long fight with cancer. Addy's journey began in 2021 when she was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma. Despite her health challenges, she was a beacon of strength and resilience.
Addy was more than just a resident of Homer Glen and a student at Reed Elementary School; she was a symbol of hope and courage. In December, she was given the title of honorary mayor. This wasn't just a ceremonial role; she actively participated in village activities. She turned on the holiday lights at the Homer for the Holidays festival, met beloved Disney characters Anna and Olaf, and even presided over a Village Board meeting. She led the Pledge of Allegiance and signed important documents, showing that even at a young age, she had a profound impact on her community.
Addy's mother, Jacqueline Grande, shared that her daughter's health began to decline in late December. Despite her struggles, Addy found joy in simple moments. One of their last memories together was creating handprints and discussing the television show "Bluey. " Addy's spirit was infectious, and her creativity and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
The village of Homer Glen honored Addy's legacy with a heartfelt statement, acknowledging her impact and the memories she created. Project Fire Buddies, a nonprofit organization supporting children with critical illnesses, also paid tribute to Addy, highlighting her strength and resilience. Her journey inspired many, and her legacy will continue to encourage others in their fight against cancer.
Addy's funeral services were held on Sunday, and the family requested donations to her Zeffy account instead of flowers. Her obituary was published online, allowing friends and family to share their memories and condolences. Addy's story serves as a reminder of the power of resilience and the impact one person can have on a community.
