Former Inmate Charged with Two Felonies After Shooting Incident Near KFC

A 50‑year‑old former inmate was taken to court on Monday after police reported that he fired a gun at another person in a parking area near KFC and Smokeville on North Center Road. The judge listed two counts: assault with a deadly weapon and using a firearm in a felony. If found guilty, the first charge carries up to four years; the second requires at least two more years in prison on top of any other sentence.

The incident occurred around 5:55 p.m. on Thursday, July 23. Officers were called to a dispute that turned violent in the shared lot of the two eateries. The victim told them that the ex‑convict had approached him and shot once, missing his target. He also claimed they had quarried over a woman days earlier.

Police found the suspect during a traffic stop near his home on Weiss Street the following day. They did not say whether they seized a weapon at that time.

Chacon’s record is extensive, with over a dozen convictions since 1994. Past offenses include armed robbery, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, serious assault, and escape from custody. In 2018 he received a sentence ranging from 30 months to 15 years for assaulting police and other violent acts. He was released on parole in November 2021 and fully discharged in February 2023, but his criminal history bars him from owning a gun legally.

The judge set a $20,000 cash bond or a 10 % surety. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 11 at 4 p.m.
