Long-term Care in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Family Affair Under Scrutiny

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) hasn't been a big part of the global chat about long-term care (LTC) policies, even though many SSA countries have adopted global promises to build fair and sustainable LTC systems. This piece looks into why there's a roadblock in creating policies that truly fit the needs of LTC in SSA, both at national and regional levels. The main challenge is that families take on most of the care responsibilities. This can lead to care that's not of equal quality and puts a lot of pressure on family caregivers. Governments have made some plans, but they often miss the mark on providing organized care and support that could reduce these issues.

Why is this happening? One reason might be that decision-makers aren't aware of all the evidence. Another is that some see organized LTC as a western idea that clashes with African values and diverts attention from other important issues like child and youth development. To break this deadlock, we need more research. We should look into how organized LTC can align with African family norms and how it might benefit the broader social and economic development of SSA.
