The study looks at how past torture affects medical visits for Syrian refugees living in Norway. It uses data from 2015 to 2024, drawn from national health records that track every visit to doctors and hospitals. The researchers first checked how often doctors recorded a “torture” diagnosis in these records. They also examined what factors made it more likely that such a diagnosis would appear, like age or gender. Next, the team linked survey answers from 2018 about personal torture experiences to the same health records.

This lets them see if those who reported being tortured use medical services differently over six years. Because many people might not visit doctors at all, the analysis used special statistical models that handle lots of zeros and variable counts. The goal is to understand whether torture has long‑lasting health impacts that show up in routine care. The research is part of a larger project, and the first set of results will be published after an initial review.
