Los Angeles Archdiocese Pays $880M in Child Abuse Settlement

In a significant move, the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Los Angeles has agreed to pay $880 million to 1,353 individuals who claim they were sexually abused as children by Catholic priests. This settlement is the largest of its kind by a U.S. diocese, addressing years of abuse allegations. Archbishop Jose H. Gomez expressed deep remorse over the incidents, hoping the settlement would provide some healing for the victims.

The archdiocese began dealing with these claims after California passed a law allowing new lawsuits based on past sexual abuse involving minors. Similar laws in other states have prompted many large Catholic organizations to seek bankruptcy protection. However, Los Angeles avoided this by tapping into its cash reserves, investments, loans, and contributions from other religious groups named in lawsuits. Gomez reassured that these payments won’t disrupt the archdiocese’s mission to serve the poor and vulnerable. Attorneys from both sides issued a joint statement, thanking survivors for sharing their stories and ensuring prevention of future abuse. “No amount of money can replace what was taken, but there is justice in accountability,” said the plaintiffs’ liaison counsel. The settlement aims to bring closure and promote a safer environment for all.
