M4 MacBook Air: Is the Upgrade Worth It?
Thursday, March 6, 2025
If you're into video calls, the M4 has a big upgrade. It features a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View and 1080p HD video recording. The M1, on the other hand, has a 720p FaceTime HD camera. The M4 also has a four-speaker sound system with Spatial Audio support, while the M1 only has stereo speakers. The M4's microphone features, like Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum modes, are also not found in the M1 model.
The M4 MacBook Air supports MagSafe charging, which is safer and frees up a Thunderbolt 4 port. It's also fast-charge capable with a 70W or higher USB-C adapter. The M1 MacBook Air infamously only supports one external display. With the M4 model, you can drive two external monitors plus the MacBook Air's built-in display. The M4 also supports more modern wireless standards: Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5. 3, compared to the M1's Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5. 0.
So, is the M4 MacBook Air worth the upgrade? It depends. If you're happy with your M1, there's no need to rush. The M1 is still a capable computer. But if you want a faster computer with a more modern design, better display, improved camera, and more, the M4 MacBook Air is a fantastic choice. Especially at $999.
