Maine's vital industries—agriculture, forestry, and fishing—are grappling with significant challenges, leaving workers under immense stress.

The Struggle of Forestry Workers

Once renowned for their resilience and happiness, forestry workers now face unprecedented hardships. The closure of mills, inflation, and tariffs have exacerbated their struggles. Equipment costs have surged by 20-25 percent since January 2025. The last six mills in the northeast ceased buying wood in November 2025, a critical blow as winter is the busiest season for these workers.

Mental Health Crisis

Mental health is a pressing concern. Workers are battling serious challenges, but discussing these issues remains taboo in their communities. Organizations are stepping in to provide support. Partnerships with groups like UMaine Cooperative Extension's Maine AgrAbility and NAMI Maine offer safety training and mental health services. However, accessibility and stigma pose significant barriers to utilizing these resources.

Dairy Farmers and Fishermen

Dairy farmers and fishermen are also facing dire circumstances. Many have mortgaged their personal homes, risking everything if they lose their jobs. The Maine Mobile Health Program is offering crucial on-site support, including medical, behavioral, dental, vision, and specialty care. They provide screenings for PFAS, blood pressure, BMI, depression, and anxiety. The program accepts most insurance types and offers services on a sliding scale for the uninsured.

The Maine AgrAbility Project

Another invaluable resource is the Maine AgrAbility Project. This initiative assists workers with disabilities or injuries by providing on-site assessments and connecting them with rehabilitation and disability services. As a chapter of a USDA-funded network operating in 21 states, the project emphasizes tailored solutions, recognizing that a one-size-fits-all approach is ineffective.
