Making The Nutcracker Accessible for All
A Welcoming Holiday Experience for All
North Central Ballet is making The Nutcracker more accessible with a sensory-friendly version of the show. This performance features:
- Softer lights
- Quieter sounds
- Flexible seating
- Noise-canceling headphones
- Fidget items to keep hands busy
- A calm lobby zone for breaks
A First in 31 Years
This is the first time in 31 years that the ballet has offered a sensory-friendly show. The idea came from a mom who asked if such a performance was available. The ballet company responded with enthusiasm and partnered with MHMR of Tarrant County to train their staff.
Changes to Enhance the Experience
To better support audiences with sensory sensitivities, the ballet made adjustments, including:
- Softening cannon sounds in the battle scene
- Creating a calm lobby zone for breaks
Tradition Meets Inclusivity
While the ballet will still hold its traditional performances, this new option ensures that more families can enjoy the magic of The Nutcracker.
"We hope this becomes a regular thing. It will be a hit and reach families who've never been to a theater before." — Jordan, Founder
