Manatees Get a New Home While Bells Ring in Venice
The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature in Bradenton has opened its doors to two young manatees, Sorbet and Juneau, who have been transferred from a Tampa hospital to continue their rehabilitation.
- Rescue & Care
- Rescued last winter, these gentle giants are still learning to thrive independently.
Because of their youth, the museum’s team maintains a special habitat until they grow stronger.
- Path to Freedom
- Once deemed healthy, most adult manatees are released into the wild.
These orphan calves stay in a secondary care program longer, ensuring they can stand on their own before departure.
- Visitor Experience
- Guests can observe Sorbet and Juneau swimming in a new setting.
Nearby displays detail each animal’s journey, treatment protocols, and release criteria.
- Benefits Beyond the Animals
- The move frees up hospital space, a significant advantage highlighted by the museum’s animal care director.
- The team is eager to witness their personalities flourish as they prepare for reintroduction into nature.
