In the world of Massachusetts high school sports, March is a month of champions and thrilling upsets. Let's dive into some of the highlights from a recent Saturday. The gymnastics scene saw Masconomet clinching their fifth state title since 2019, bouncing back from a second-place finish the previous year. This victory underscores their consistent dominance in the sport. Meanwhile, Shawsheen's wrestling team continued their winning streak, securing the All-State title by a narrow margin over Central Catholic. Senior Sid Tildsley's performance was a standout, making history as the fourth wrestler in state history to win four All-State titles. This achievement was quickly followed by another milestone as Chelmsford senior Thomas Brown became the fifth wrestler to achieve this feat. The two seniors have been friends since childhood, adding a personal touch to their accomplishments. Putnam's girls' wrestling team also made headlines, winning the team title despite not having any wrestlers in the finals. They edged out Lowell to secure the top spot. The New England track and field championships at the Reggie Lewis Center featured a remarkable performance by Brockton senior Lucas Andrade. Andrade shattered his own state record in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7. 22 seconds, a record that had stood since 1991. This performance not only broke the state record but also set a new meet record. In the hockey arena, the biggest upset came from Bishop Stang, who secured their second tournament win with a 4-0 victory over Notre Dame (Hingham). This victory marked their first-ever tournament win and was a significant achievement for the team. The night also saw several impressive performances, including four hat tricks from Nauset's hockey teams. Gaby Basset scored one in the girls' game, while Colin Ward, Logan Poulin, and Jake Eldredge each scored one in the boys' game. Other notable hat tricks came from Travis Thomas of Canton, Nate Sannella of Scituate, Timmy Holton of Dedham, and Izzy O’Brien of Archbishop Williams. North Reading senior captain Thomas Gazda had a standout night with 2 goals and 3 assists in a 6-2 win over Wilmington. The evening was filled with dramatic moments, including four walk-off wins. Jack Prince of Milton scored the game-winning goal in triple overtime to beat Newburyport, 3-2. Arlington’s Quinlan McNulty-Lue secured a 4-3 win over St. Mary’s in the first overtime period. Woburn’s Jack McEleney scored the winning goal in double overtime to defeat Westwood, 3-2. Chloe Bryda of Bishop Feehan needed only 29 seconds of overtime to give her team a 3-2 win over Lincoln-Sudbury. Winthrop’s Aidan Survilas broke a 2-2 deadlock with 40 seconds left to secure a 3-2 victory over Norwell. The basketball scene also had its share of excitement. Brooks senior Alex Wilkins had an incredible performance with 47 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists in a 71-62 win over Roxbury Latin. Ryder Frost of Phillips Exeter led his team to a 70-61 victory over Phillips Andover with 29 points. Jimmer Donnelly of Millbury had 26 points in a 60-37 victory over New Heights Charter. Dartmouth men’s basketball, coached by David McLaughlin, made history by qualifying for the Ivy League Tournament for the first time with a 78-58 win over Brown.
