Marcus Freeman: A New Deal and a Bright Future at Notre Dame
Marcus Freeman, the head coach of Notre Dame, has decided to remain with the university for another season after securing a better contract. This decision comes as a surprise to many, as there was speculation that he might transition to the NFL, with teams like the New York Giants reportedly interested in his services.
A Strong Tenure at Notre Dame
Freeman has had an impressive run at Notre Dame, compiling a 43-12 record in just four seasons. He led the Fighting Irish to the CFP National Championship game earlier this year. Despite a strong season, including 10 consecutive regular-season wins, Notre Dame finished 11th in the final standings and opted to skip the bowl game.
Support from Athletic Director Pete Bevacqua
Pete Bevacqua, Notre Dame's athletic director, has been a vocal supporter of Freeman. He stated that Freeman is the best coach for Notre Dame and acknowledged the NFL's interest in him. Bevacqua emphasized that the university is taking steps to retain Freeman, including offering him a new contract—the second extension since December 2024.
Bevacqua views Freeman's contract as flexible and evolving, ensuring that Freeman feels valued and supported. He also believes Freeman deserves to be among the top-paid coaches in college football.
Freeman's Coaching Journey
Freeman joined Notre Dame as the defensive coordinator in 2021 before taking over as head coach after Brian Kelly's departure to LSU. Prior to Notre Dame, he coached at Cincinnati, Purdue, and Kent State. Freeman was also an All-Big Ten linebacker at Ohio State and was drafted by the NFL in 2009.
