Marston Library: A Student-Driven Shift Back to Round-the-Clock Access

After student feedback and advocacy, Marston Science Library is once again open 24 hours a day, five days a week.

Student-Driven Change

The decision to extend hours came after student representatives brought a resolution to the university's board of trustees. The funding for these extended hours is provided by the university provost, separate from the regular library budget.

Why Marston?

• Wider floor plan for better security monitoring.
• Central location near the Hub, reducing late-night walks.
• Easier transition from Newell Hall, which closes earlier.

Student Government's Role

Blake Cox, president of Student Government, advocated for the change. The interim president and interim dean of libraries supported the idea, ensuring minimal cost increases.

Mixed Reactions

• Some students appreciate the 24-hour access, seeing it as an investment in student success.
• Others question the usage data, as most students leave by 9 p.m. even when the library is open until 1 a.m.
