Scientists tested seven different mask materials to see how well they block radioactive alpha and beta particles. They looked at rayon fiber, pure cotton, paper fiber, polyester fiber, nonwoven fiber, advanced nonwoven fiber, and N95 masks. The results were surprising. Most masks could block over 90% of alpha particles. Rayon, polyester, and N95 masks were the superheroes, blocking almost all alpha particles. But beta particles were a different story. None of the masks could block them effectively. Polyester and N95 masks did better than the rest, blocking over 10% of beta particles. The study also hinted that electret fiber might help block beta particles.

So, what's the takeaway? If you're in a radiation emergency and can't get to safety, grab a thick polyester or N95 mask. It's better than nothing. But remember, this is just one study.
