Mattel's Wicked Dolls Lead to Unexpected Adult Site
USAMonday, November 11, 2024
Retailers like Target, Walmart, and Amazon swiftly removed the dolls from their shelves. These dolls, which include Ariana Grande’s Glinda and Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba, were supposed to promote the upcoming Wicked movie. Instead of directing fans to the movie’s official site, the link took them to a page requiring users to be 18 and older. Clicking through led to a porn site promoting a new adult film.
The mix-up happened because the packaging listed wicked. com instead of wickedmovie. com. Wicked. com has been associated with adult content since 1994. Meanwhile, the misprinted dolls have become collector’s items, selling for hundreds on eBay.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of double-checking details, especially when it comes to promoting a highly anticipated movie like Wicked.
