Mayor Johnson's New Budget Plan: Tax Relief and Job Cuts
Chicago, USAMonday, December 16, 2024
Additionally, middle-management jobs in city departments could be cut to save money. The mayor seems to be avoiding layoffs or furlough days. Johnson's previous tax hike proposals, including a $300 million increase, were rejected by the City Council. It's uncertain if this new plan will pass. Alderman Brian Hopkins, who chairs the Public Safety Committee, called the proposal "tinkering at the margins. " He expressed doubt about the revenue sources to replace the property tax levy. Other aldermen also have concerns about the budget and the future of city services. The City Council will reconvene to discuss and potentially vote on the budget.
