Mayor Johnson's New Budget Plan: Tax Relief and Job Cuts

This plan aims to end the city's budget stalemate by dropping a proposed $68. 5 million property tax increase and cutting 10 jobs from his office. The mayor's office has grown larger under Johnson and his predecessor, Lori Lightfoot. The plan also includes skipping a $40 million payment on a loan for the site of the demolished Michael Reese Hospital. This site was meant for an Olympic village for the 2016 Summer Games. The plan also looks to charge for police and traffic services at ticketed events and save on energy. Public safety cuts might involve reducing police vacancies.

Additionally, middle-management jobs in city departments could be cut to save money. The mayor seems to be avoiding layoffs or furlough days.
