Mayor Postpones Budget Vote to Monday Amidst Council Dubiety
Chicago, USAFriday, December 13, 2024
The budget plan involves raising taxes and fees that directly impact Chicagoans, such as increasing the checkout bag tax from 7 to 10 cents and raising the cost of residential parking permits. It also includes expanding congestion fees for rideshare trips downtown. A tax on streaming services would go up to 10. 25 percent, and the city's personal property lease tax would increase to 11 percent. These changes aim to close the $982 million spending gap projected by the Johnson administration.
Johnson's initial proposal for a $300 million property tax hike was widely opposed and voted down unanimously. He then reduced the amount to $150 million before lowering it further to $68. 5 million. Despite these changes, the budget faces opposition. Some council members suggest cutting city workforce, especially among upper management, to avoid the property tax increase. Others propose removing vacant police department positions to reduce the tax hike.
