Mayor’s New Rules on Youth at Festival

The city held a big African‑American festival last Saturday. About one hundred teens caused trouble, and the police called it civil unrest. Two officers were hit by the crowd. The mayor decided that from now on, anyone under 18 must have an adult with them at the event. He said no unsupervised teens would be allowed to stay. This change is different from what the mayor said before. Earlier he criticized people for pointing out problems with unaccompanied teens in the city. Other incidents happened that day too. A fourteen‑year‑old stole a car and hit a three‑year‑old, killing the child. Police also moved over a thousand teens away from another area of town.

The problems show that quick fixes only touch the surface. True solutions need to focus on why teens act badly in the first place. One simple reason is that families often do not set clear rules or expectations for children. Without a parent to guide them, many teens have no idea how to behave in society. Some leaders think the government should step in more. But money alone cannot replace a family that cares for its kids. The mayor and other officials could ask parents to be more responsible. They can use laws that encourage good parenting instead of just blaming kids for their actions. A few local leaders already want parents to step up more in the state. It is a good sign, but it is not enough yet.
