Measles Outbreak in Pennsylvania: The Unvaccinated Face the Highest Risk

A Preventable Crisis Unfolds in Lebanon County

Health officials in Pennsylvania are on high alert as a measles outbreak continues to spread, originating in Lebanon County. So far, 11 confirmed cases have been reported—most of them in individuals who did not receive the MMR vaccine. Three patients required hospitalization, but all have since recovered, and no active transmission is currently detected.

Statewide, 22 additional cases have been recorded this year, with all but one occurring in unvaccinated individuals. The pattern is unmistakable: measles thrives in communities where vaccination rates fall below safe thresholds.

Why Measles Is a Silent Threat

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases known to science. A single cough or sneeze in an enclosed space can infect up to 90% of nearby unvaccinated people. When immunization rates drop, outbreaks become inevitable.

The MMR vaccine—given in two doses—is 97% effective in preventing measles. Yet despite its proven safety and accessibility, misinformation, convenience barriers, and gaps in awareness persist, leaving families vulnerable.

The Choice Is Clear

Measles is entirely preventable. The tools exist. The science is settled.

The question remains: Will enough people use them?
