Measles: Do You Really Need a Booster?

The measles outbreak that began in Texas last January is spreading fast. By March 27, 2025, the U. S. had 483 confirmed cases, more than the entire previous year. Most cases are in unvaccinated people. This has left many wondering if they need another shot. The measles vaccine, introduced in 1963, uses a weakened version of the virus to train the immune system. Most people who got the vaccine as kids are likely protected for life. Those born before 1957 probably had measles and are immune. But there are exceptions. Some people got a less effective vaccine between 1963 and 1967. If that's you, you might need a booster. The same goes for high-risk groups like healthcare workers or college students. But for most adults, a second dose isn't usually needed.

Checking vaccine records is a good idea. States, schools, and doctors' offices often keep them. But antibody tests? Probably not necessary. They don't always show true immunity. Plus, vaccines create immunity safely, unlike natural infection, which can cause serious problems. The measles vaccine can cause mild symptoms, but it can't give you measles.
