Measles Returns: Michigan Faces First Outbreak in Years

Measles is back in Michigan. The state has seen its first outbreak since 2019. Health officials have confirmed seven cases so far this year. Three of these cases are in Montcalm County. This is a big deal because measles is highly contagious. One infected person can spread it to nine out of ten people who are not protected. Measles is a serious disease. Before the vaccine, it infected millions of people each year. Many of them died. The vaccine has changed that. It is very effective. One dose is 93% effective. Two doses are 97% effective. Most adults who got the vaccine as kids do not need a booster. However, there is a problem. Not all children are getting vaccinated. In Montcalm County, almost 25% of children under 3 have not received their first dose of the MMR vaccine. This is worrying. It means more people are at risk of getting measles.

Michigan is not alone. Five other states have also reported outbreaks. Nationwide, there are over 700 cases in at least 24 states. This is the highest number since 2019. Texas has the most cases, with over 560 infections. Two unvaccinated school-aged children in Texas have died from measles. Health officials are urging people to get vaccinated. The CDC recommends two doses of the MMR vaccine. The first dose should be given between 12 and 15 months of age. The second dose should be given between 4 and 6 years of age. This is the best way to protect against measles. Measles is a preventable disease. Vaccination is the key. It is important for everyone to get vaccinated. This will help stop the spread of measles.
