Medical School's New Grading System: Helping the Underserved?
Wednesday, December 11, 2024
The findings were promising. Most students performed just as well or even better under the pass/fail system. And here’s where it gets interesting: the achievement gap between underrepresented (URiM) and non-URiM students narrowed. This suggests that the new grading system might create a fairer environment for all in medical school.
But who are these underrepresented students? They come from groups like Black and Latinx communities, who are often underrepresented in the medical field. These students face unique challenges, and grading systems can either help or hinder their success. So, this study isn't just about grades; it's about who gets to become a doctor and how.
