Medication Management in Kenyan Cancer Clinics: A Fresh Look

In many parts of Kenya, cancer patients often receive complicated drug schedules that can lead to dangerous side effects. Yet a special service called Medication Therapy Management (MTM) is not widely used in these settings, leaving gaps in patient safety. A recent study set out to understand how well patients, their caregivers, and doctors know about MTM. It also looked at how the service is currently used, what stops it from being more common, and where improvements could happen. The research team surveyed people at several cancer treatment centers across the country. They asked questions about what MTM is, how it can help patients, and whether doctors feel equipped to provide it. Results showed that many patients and caregivers were not familiar with MTM, but they trusted their doctors to manage medications safely. Healthcare workers expressed some knowledge of the concept, yet many felt they lacked training or resources to implement it fully.

Barriers identified included limited staff, heavy patient loads, and a shortage of medication counseling tools. Some clinicians also mentioned that patients often do not ask about drug side effects, which reduces opportunities for MTM. Despite these challenges, the study found several chances to boost MTM use. For instance, integrating medication reviews into routine visits could catch errors early. Training programs for nurses and pharmacists might also increase confidence in providing MTM services. Overall, the research highlights a clear need for better medication management practices in Kenyan cancer care. By addressing training gaps and resource limits, these centers could reduce adverse drug events and improve outcomes for patients.
