Mediterranean Allies Boost Teamwork in 2026
2026 Plans Include Enhanced Defense Cooperation
Greece, Israel, and Cyprus are set to intensify their joint military exercises in the eastern Mediterranean by 2026. This move strengthens their defense cooperation, which has grown significantly over the past decade through shared training, defense deals, and energy projects.
The alliance has drawn regional attention, particularly from Turkey, a key rival.
Recent Agreement Strengthens Ties
Top military officials from the three nations recently signed an agreement in Cyprus. The deal focuses on:
- Enhancing maritime security
- Advancing energy projects
- Joint naval and air exercises
- Knowledge sharing to counter security threats
Greece is also expected to join Israel's Noble Dina naval exercise soon.
Greece Invests in Advanced Defense Systems
Greece has been actively purchasing advanced missile systems from Israel, worth billions of euros. Additionally, negotiations are underway for more anti-aircraft and anti-ballistic missile systems as part of the "Achilles Shield" defense project, aimed at bolstering Greece's security.
Opposition Raises Concerns
Not all parties support these plans. Cyprus' Communist AKEL party has expressed concerns about deepening military ties with Israel without fully assessing the potential risks.
Regional Tensions and Future Implications
This heightened cooperation comes amid rising tensions in the region, especially with the recent Gaza ceasefire. As these nations strengthen their alliance, the balance of power in the eastern Mediterranean could shift significantly.
