Meet the New Anti-Hate Crimes Boss: A Fresh Start for City Hall

Mayor Adams has found a replacement for the previous hate crimes prevention chief, who was fired back in April. The new boss, Vijah Ramjattan, comes with a unique set of skills from his background in mental health and community work. With over a decade of experience in helping marginalized communities, Ramjattan is expected to hit the ground running in his new role. He takes over from Naveed Hassan, who claimed he was fired due to religious discrimination. Hassan had been a strong advocate for closing Rikers Island, a controversial jail.

Ramjattan also has a history with Rikers, having worked there and advocated for its closure. Alongside Ramjattan, Adams has appointed Eric Ware, an ex-official from Staten Island, as his deputy. This new team is stepping in at a crucial time, as hate crimes have been on the rise in the city. However, the mayor's office assures that the rates are lower compared to last year.
