Meet Tyler Marsh: A Rising WNBA Coach with NBA Roots

Tyler Marsh, the new Chicago Sky coach, has a resume that reads like a dream. He's worked under some of the best in the business, including Philadelphia 76ers coach Nick Nurse and Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle. Before Chicago, he was part of Becky Hammon’s championship-winning staff in Las Vegas. When both Nurse and Carlisle visited Chicago, they had high praises for Marsh's ability to transform the Sky. Nurse jokingly said, "Tyler’s got more rings than anybody sitting in this room. " Marsh’s journey started with Nurse in the D-League (now G League), where he won his first championship. He then worked with both coaches in the NBA, learning their strategies and picking up their coaching styles. Carlisle appreciated Marsh’s reserved manner and his knack for commanding attention.

Marsh aims to blend the best of his mentors' techniques into his own style. He hopes to bring the same fearlessness Nurse showed, which led to unique strategies like the box-and-one defense used in the 2019 NBA Finals. While it didn’t win that game, it contributed to a championship win. Marsh wants to bring this risk-taking approach to the Sky. The trend of NBA assistants moving to WNBA head coaching roles continues, with Marsh being the latest. Despite salary differences, the quality of basketball and coaching in the WNBA is compelling. Both Nurse and Carlisle see the coaching trees overlapping more as the WNBA gains momentum.
