However, she now recognizes that women's power hinges on their health. Lever for Change, an affiliate of the MacArthur Foundation, is managing this grant competition called Action for Women’s Health. They have a history of working with notable philanthropists, including MacKenzie Scott. This open call will benefit at least 100 nonprofits globally, offering them between $1 million and $5 million. The goal is to support organizations where this funding will make a significant impact, regardless of their size.

The application process is thorough and includes peer reviews and expert panel assessments. Cecilia Conrad, CEO of Lever for Change, believes this approach democratizes philanthropy, making it more accessible and equitable. Pivotal Ventures is considering a wide range of health interventions, from mental health to menopause. This diverse approach can help identify gaps in funding and resources and shape their future strategies. Sarah Baird, a professor from the George Washington University, advises donors to support existing institutions and a broad scope of interventions. She stresses that merely focusing on traditional health metrics won’t suffice; addressing mental health, gender-based violence, and economic benefits for healthy workers are crucial. Melinda French Gates’ initial $1 billion commitment in May included $200 million for U.S. organizations and personal grants to 12 individuals. This $250 million open call is another significant step in fulfilling her philanthropic vision.
