On New Year's Day, a devastating event shook New Orleans when a man drove a truck into a crowd in the French Quarter, leaving 14 people dead and 30 injured. The FBI revealed that the perpetrator, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, had used Meta's smart glasses to scout the area before the attack. These glasses, a collaboration between Meta and Ray-Ban, feature a built-in camera, speakers, and AI that can be voice, button, or gesture-controlled. Although Jabbar recorded his scouting with the glasses, he didn't activate the livestreaming feature during the attack.

What can these hi-tech glasses do? They allow users to capture images and videos, upload them to Instagram or Facebook, and even livestream to Meta's social platforms. Additionally, they support audio and video calls, messaging, and listening to music. The glasses are also equipped with an AI assistant that can translate text, answer simple questions, and recognize nearby landmarks. However, they can't perform complex tasks like booking restaurant reservations or providing turn-by-turn directions. One interesting feature is the LED light that turns on when the camera is in use, ensuring bystanders know when they are being recorded. This visual indicator is a crucial privacy feature that can't be disabled.
